Parks in Truckee Meadows

1/17/2019

Today Cheri Hill is joined by two guests from the Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation. Nate Daniel is the Executive Director, and Heidi Anderson is the Program Director for the Foundation. The Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation is a private non-profit organization. Their goal is to improve the lives of locals by enhancing the quality of local parks.

The Foundation has created a number of programs; ranging in age groups from children to adults, and guided walks and tours. All of these events are open to everyone and anyone who wants to learn more about the many parks Nevada has to offer.

Some great examples of these programs include the Student Stewards Program, the Truckee Meadows Trails Challenge, and the Junior Naturalist Program.

The Students Stewards Program is a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) course; in which students are taken to a park and engage in activities relating to observation, data collecting and research. Topics range from environmental change, to habitats, and ecosystems. Through these projects, participating students are shown how math and science can be applied to the real world, and what careers in the field or working with wildlife would be like.

The Truckee Meadows Trails Challenge is definitely for those who enjoy hiking. After registering a group, you select a number of trails and a challenge. Challenges range in distance from walking five miles, up to 100 miles on local trails. All participants have a year to complete their challenge, and must log their miles. After completing a log book and returning it, you will receive an "I Survived the Truckee Meadows Trails Challenge" t-shirt!

And finally, the Junior Naturalist Program. Similar to the Student Stewards Program, the Junior Naturalists is more aimed for children. As a part of this program, your child will be given a Parks Passport, and will receive a stamp for each Junior Naturalist event attended. And they can earn prizes for earning stamps! These include a pin and certificate, followed by hat, and a pack.
